I have kept a log of my media use and production over a ten day period (12th-21st March) compared this to the JOUR1111 cohort, essentially to determine how my relationship to journalism and mass communication stacks up. It was well worth keeping track of all the time I spent using and producing on different media platforms, as I had an interesting result. Read all about it!

*I have listed the number of texts/email/photos used and produced, here and for the purpose of conformity, are referred to elsewhere as having the following time values: email=5 minutes, photo= 1 minute, text= 1 minute.
Note: The audio visual value does not include videos watched on the internet or lectures (which are mainly reading, but which also have audio visual content, so are calculated into the visual values).
Observations:
•Fig 1: I watch less TV, spend less of the time I’m on the internet on Facebook, and am in the minority of the cohort for not having an internet enabled smart phone.
•Fig 1: I belong to the majority of the cohort who have a PC, get most of their news from TV, spend under an hour listening to the radio per day, have one Facebook account, and didn’t have any blogs or a Twitter account before JOUR1111.
•Fig 2: I tend to use more media than I produce.
•Fig 2: 9/10 days I went on the internet, 10/10 I listened to music/radio, 10/10 I used and/or produced visual media and 7/10 I watched TV.
•Fig 2: My highest usage alone was in the audio platform (music and radio).
•Fig 2: My highest media production was on the internet: especially Facebook and blogging, which was closely followed by visual: mainly reading print and digital texts (for uni).
•Fig 2: My most regular media usage was SMS (sent and received at least one per day).
•Fig 3: My user-producer relationship to visual media was the strongest, followed by audio, then the internet, and lastly, audio-visual.
Analysis
I am set in my ways *cough*lazy*cough* when it comes down to it: I tend to only listen to Triple J and 4ZZZ, watch only the 7pm ABC news, follow the same people on Twitter and Facebook, read the same newspapers, and produce the same kinds on media. This means that my relationship to journalism and communication is stagnant. I have found myself in a media rut, from which I find it difficult to escape. By only using and producing with what I know, I am missing out on many new, exciting technologies.
I listen to a lot of radio and music, as so much of my time is spent commuting because of uni, and doing assignments. Though a lot of this is passive listening, I believe this platform is very suitable for me to catch the day's headlines, plus, there's not much else to do on the train. I still need to vary what I listen to: perhaps I can listen to the ABC radio channels. My TV habits have changed a lot since my uni hours are irregular; I do not always watch my 7pm ABC news *David Curnow, Jessica Van Vonderen!!*, although I would like to. A solution to this is trying to catch the news on other time slots or channels, so I get some form of audio-visual news each day, at least.
I realised that I could be producing a lot more media than I do as well, and as the internet is the perfect platform for the novice blogger, you will definitely be seeing me do more on this blog! I was somewhat surprised that my highest media usage and production was on the visual platform, as I do not generally think of my activities in lectures, tutorials, and doing readings as relating to media. I will try to shake this passive mentality and look at this form of media as possessing of all the opportunities for communication it contains.
To repair my failing relationship to journalism, I need greater communication and understanding and to shake it up a bit. *notice the dating innuendo?*. I will do more research on stories I have heard about in my usual media and to become well informed for when I my opinions with the items on my blog. I need to swallow my prejudices against the likes of channels 7, 9 and 10 (my 'their News isn't real News' attitude means my News diet lacks a lot of variety)-even just so that I can experience items from a different viewpoint and with different bias.

To conclude:
I am a lazy journalist, so I need to be a more active journalist. This means following up on things and stories that interest me, give the topics that are important to me more coverage by posting about them on my blog, Twitter and Facebook. I should also shake it up a bit by using different media to communicate with the world and gain a more extensive world view. Then shake it up a bit more by varying my audio and audio visual diet (watch more of channels other than the ABC, and listen to radio other than Triple J and 4ZZZ). Finally, I need to be adventurous by taking an interest in what is happening in the world and my local community. An optional extra that would probably help: fork out for an internet enabled smart phone so I can join the digital revolution.
